It’s 1999 and IN MY HEAD I’M 21 begins with teenager Declan having a rare good dream about the future. To his surprise and excitement, in the dream, he has grown up to be a transgender man. When a group of seemingly omniscient Celestials visit him offering the gift of prophecy in exchange for saving the world from the Y2K crisis, he accepts. But the task they’ve given him – to invent a new number to buy time before the clock strikes the year 2000 – seems impossible. With the help of his confidant, movie-geek Eve, Declan learns to accept the power he has in creating his own future. Using Y2K as a metaphor for both anti-trans panic and putting your faith in tomorrow, IN MY HEAD I’M 21 presents transness as its own kind of prophetic magic.
